History of the King's Head

The 1904 Woodbridge licensing records show that the King's Head's license was issued in 1703.

According to Booth's Almanac of 1899, the King's Head, or Saint Edmund's Head (from a Will of Gilys Levet, dated 1552) may be the oldest inn in the town. Some curious heads adorn the south wall of the King's Head, and from their appearance may be said to represent Woodbridgians who lived in the days of Richard II, if not of Edward III (1312-77). There is a probability however that these heads first adorned some other edifice, and may pre-date (possibly by a century or two) the foundation of the existing structure. In 1899 the property was owned by John Dupuis Cobbold, Esq.

A report in the Ipswich Journal on Mar-14 in 1840 when Mrs Goodhall was the landlady states that; "Timothy Woods, an ostler at the pub was accused of theft of a customer's coat. The charge was withdrawn during the trial."
